Background
C-reactive protein (CRP) , a member of the pentraxin family, is an acute-phase protein of hepatic origin in response to a wide range of acute and chronic inflammatory conditions such as bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, rheumatic and other inflammatory diseases, malignancy, and tissue injury and necrosis. Functionally CRP can bind to the phosphocholine expressed on the surface of dead or dying cells and some bacteria, activate the complement system, and promote macrophage-mediated phagocytosis to clean necrotic and apoptotic cells, and infected pathogens.
Therefore the CRP level increase may indicate tissue injury, infection or inflammation. The Elisa kit can effectively detect the concentrations of CRP in serum and diagnose the so-called acute phase response.
